Halloween's War

Once a year, when the Harvest moon flies
and leaves pale in fear and fall from the skies,
Death takes over Life as the autumn Sun cries
sinking beneath the horizon, cold as it dies.
The wind turns frigid and carries a breeze
that forces the back rigid and causes them to sneeze.
The spicy scent of Fall dances through trees
that wave in the wind obeying its pleas.
Now come the humans in so many faces
that trek through all of the season's sacred places.
Trading tricks for treats in incognito races
flying to the doors in hurried little paces.
"KNOCK KNOCK, Trick or TREAT!!!!"
A door opens and candy falls to their feet.
Calling back "THANK YOU" as they retreat
the horde of little monsters take to the street.
Glowing faces in the windows appear,
some full of joy and some full of fear.
Jack- O- Lanterns to brighten the drear
of a dying season celebrated each year.
Still high above, the full moon beams
as clouds race by causing it shimmers and gleams.
The blue veil she casts illuminates the steams
of the foggy spirits that swirl in thick streams.
Each breeze brings another leafy rain
while outside are stories of the gruesome and insane.
Little kids laughing seeking candy to gain
from the adults hiding in houses with fear that they feign.
Onward we'd run to the next victims door
to claim all of our candy and then run for some more.
Dressed up real cute or covered in gore,
an army of children fighting Halloween's war
to stay alive until the stroke of midnight
celebrating a time of unfearful fright
until the ghostly must take certain flight
and be back in the grave by dawn's first sad light.
The last throw of life is gone from the Fall,
now the dead leaves cover it all.
The children wake and will not remember
for today is the first day of bleak November.
